"Ace of Aces" and pioneer of commercial aviation lived here

Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Eddie Rickenbacker paid $100 a month to live in this house in 1930 according to the U.S. census. He was a racing champion in the early days of the automobile. Rickenbacker was the chauffeur for General John J. Pershing at the beginning of World War I. He transferred to the newly formed Air Corps. and learned to fly in 17 days. Rickenbacker's service with the famed 94th Squadron totaled 26 German planes and blimps shot down. He won the Medal of Honor and 55 other decorations, making him the most decorated pilot of World War I. Rickenbacker started the Rickenbacker Motor Company in 1920. The company went bankrupt in 1927 and Rickenbacker suffered massive debt. He repaid the $250,000 debt and bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1927. In 1934 General Motors aked Rickenbacker to take over the failing Eastern Airlines. Eastern would turn a profit every year from 1935 to 1960 under Rickenbacker's management. He passed away in 1973.
