Pioneering politician and actress who coined the nickname "Tricky Dick" owned this house

Actress Helen Gahagan Douglas owned this house in 1938. She was a Broadway star during the 1920's. In 1944 Gahagan Douglas became the first Democratic woman to be elected to Congress from California. She served Congress from 1945 to 1951. Gahagan Douglas ran for the United States Senate in 1950. During the campaign she gave her opponent, future U.S. President, Richard M. Nixon the nickname "Tricky Dick." Gahagan Douglas lost the election, but the nickname stuck with Nixon and has become one of the most recognizable in presidential history. Gahagan Douglas was married to two-time Academy Award winning actor Melvyn Douglas. She passed away in 1980.
