New York City police commissioner Lewis Valentine owned this house in 1938. He was sworn in as a New York City police officer in 1903 and served as New York City police commissioner from 1934 until his retirement in 1945. Valentine was known for not tolerating corruption and was denied promotion during the Prohibition years when graft was commonplace. In 1934 Fiorello Laguardia was elected Mayor of New York City on an ant-corruption ticket and appointed Valentine police commissioner. He passed away in 1946.
