State Department official and writer, Reed Harris, owned this house in 1967. United States Senator (Wisc.), Joseph McCarthy, harassed Reed out of office during the Red Scare of the 1950s. Harris responded to McCarthy's unrelenting bullying during a nationally televised hearing by stating he "resented the senator's attempt to publicly wring his neck." Harris passed away in 1982.
