Sun Ra house
by BlockShopper Historian published Aug. 03, 2009
Legendary jazz musician Sun Ra moved into this three-story Germantown rowhouse in 1968 after leaving New York for Philadelphia. The house would wind up being the home of Sun Ra and his band, the Arkestra, until Ra's death in 1993. The band frequently jammed in the front room of the home, and reportedly painted the door with psychedelic colors and covered the window glass with aluminum foil to keep people from seeing in. According to a 2005 New York Times article, Arkestra saxaphonist Marshall Allen, who's father originally owned the property, still lives in the home.
